Two men suspected in a check scam involving several local banks and merchants have been arrested after a month-long investigation, Morgan County Sheriff Ana Franklin said.
Officers charged Reginald Davis, 26, of 1407 Brookline Ave. S.W., with three counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument, and Justin Zontana Patterson, 21, of 22168 Menowa Trail, Athens, with one count of second-degree possession of a forged instrument.
Both remained in Morgan County Jail on Friday, Davis in lieu of $105,000 bail and Patterson on $50,000 bail. The pair was arrested Aug. 23.
Franklin said a manager at Traditions Bank in Priceville reported the scam Sept. 7, 2012. Bank personnel said two men opened a checking account, one using a check purported to be from Calhoun Community College, the other drawn on the account of General Electric. Both checks appeared to be issued by Regions Bank.
Franklin said the checks were electronic forgeries.
She said the two men purchased software that allowed them to print their own checks, using false information.
"Chief Investigator Kyle Wilson was able to positively identify the suspects and discovered a trail of fraudulent transactions all over the Tennessee Valley," Franklin said. "After gaining sufficient evidence, he tracked the suspects to an apartment in Decatur, where they were arrested."
